New carriages

Our carriages are carpeted, centrally heated and air-conditioned, and provide views from panoramic windows. All our trains also have a licensed cafe carriage as well as an open air viewing area.

New Carriages

New carriages on Coastal Pacific with panoramic windowsTo enhance the comfort and scenic experience of your rail journey, new saloon, cafe and open air viewing carriages are being introduced on the Coastal Pacific, TranzAlpine and the All-New Northern Explorer.

The new centrally heated, air-conditioned carriages will feature un-tinted, non-reflective, panoramic side and roof windows to capture the dramatic coastal and mountain views, and allow better photography.

Comfort and commentary

New carriages on Coastal Pacific with panoramic windowsEach saloon carriage will also include a GPS triggered journey commentary in five languages at your seat via passenger headphones, plus information displays and overhead HD video.

Comfortable saloon seating is available either configured paired seating around tables, or as recliners that can be rotated to face the direction of travel. The ride will also be quieter and smoother, thanks to an advanced air- bag suspension system.

Impaired passenger assistance

For mobility-impaired passengers, wheelchair hoists provide access to the café car from track level, spaces for wheel chair users and a disabled public toilet. For hearing-impaired passengers a hearing loop covers the whole saloon and cash register area of the café carriage.

"Awesome! Take your warm clothes because the outside carriage is the best way to see the countryside the train goes through!"
