Some useful information for planning your travel with KiwiRail Scenic Journeys

Making a booking

To make a booking, simply click on the "book now" tab at the top right hand side of the website, or use the 'book now' tool on the right to enter your travel details. Once you've selected your fares, added any pre-purchase food items, added your personal contact details and completed payment, your ticket, itinerary and receipt will be sent to you in an email via the email address provided.

Stopping off on your journey

You can complete the whole journey, or you can break your trip at stops along the way by using the "add a stop" button. Each stopover is an additional $10, and a maximum of 3 stops can be included on one journey. 

Multiple journeys

You can also book more than one train journey in one booking by selecting "add another leg". For example, you are able to select the Coastal Pacific then the TranzAlpine service.

Seat Allocation

At check-in on your day of travel you will receive a boarding pass with your carriage and seat allocation. All carriages include airline-styled paired seating and seating around tables. Families and group bookings are allocated table seating wherever possible.

Online seat selection is not currently available, but if you have a specific seating request or wish to seat separate bookings together, please email bookings@kiwirailscenic.co.nz with your booking reference(s) and we will do our best to accommodate your requests. Our friendly on-board crew will also do their best to accommodate any seat change requests on your day of travel. 

Throughfares

Throughfares are fares that include either a ferry, flight or bus component for travel beyond our stations. Throughfares can be booked with the Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine train journeys; Interislander Throughfares and Sounds Air Throughfares are available for travel between Wellington & Picton (Coastal Pacific), and Intercity Throughfares are available for travel between Greymouth & Queenstown (TranzAlpine). 

Booking on the Coastal Pacific

As our summer train, the Coastal Pacific operates daily between October and April only - so seats aren't available to book between May and September. The 2015/16 summer season commences on 25 September 2015, and carries through to 1 May 2016.

Fare types

KiwiRail Scenic Journeys have a range of fare types available with different levels of flexibility to suit your specific travel needs. Please make a booking to view fares available on your chosen journey. Supergold discounts are available on selected fare types only.

Travelling with children

Children aged between 2 & 14 years inclusive are classified as a "child", and cannot travel unaccompanied. A child less than 2 years old is classified as an infant and may travel free of charge on the guardians knee. 

Passengers requiring accessibility assistance

If you have any accessibility requirements, please select the type of accessibility assistance required at the time of booking.

An accessibility hoist is available on all scenic train services and provides access from the platform to our Café carriage. Each Café carriage has an allocation of two spaces for either wheel or power chair bound customers or storage of power chair or mobility scooters. The Café carriage also provides a range of food and beverages that can be purchased as well as an accessibility toilet. All carriages are fitted with hearing loops to boost the PA sound levels. 

Hoist restrictions:

  • Maximum weight on ramp = 200kg
  • Maximum length = 112cm
  • Maximum width = 65cm

Pre-purchase your meal

For added savings and to avoid disappointment, selected menu items are available to pre-purchase when you book your journey. Food cannot be pre-purchased within 5 days of travel. Items offered for pre-order are a selection from the full onboard menu. In the unlikely event that we cannot supply any part of your pre-ordered meal, we will offer the option of an alternative item from our onboard menu.

Check-in prior to departure

Passengers are advised to be at the station at least 20 minutes before departure time.

Baggage & stowage

Your standard baggage allowance is 2 items per person, maximum weight 20kg (44 pounds) per item. Size must be no more than 200 linear cm (height plus length plus width - approx 6.5 linear feet). Baggage out side this allowance must be booked as excess baggage. Oversized baggage such as bikes cannot be transported on any InterCity bus legs booked due to space constraints. Lost Property

For any lost items on board one of our services please email bookings@kiwirailscenic.co.nz. Please state your booking reference, date of journey, service name, and a description of the item, and our team will do their best to help locate your belongings. 

Smokefree Policy      

By law, all trains are designated non-smoking services (Smokefree Places Act 1990). Smoking is not permitted anywhere on board, including the open air viewing carriages. Most services include one or two stops where passengers may alight to the platform for a short break, however these stops are provided at the discretion of the On Board Supervisor and are not guaranteed. Our terminals and stations are also smokefree.
