How to find the Northern Explorer station in Auckland

Northern Explorer at Auckland Strand Station

There are many stations in Auckland, so you need to ensure you are heading to the right one when looking for the KiwiRail Scenic Journeys Northern Explorer long distance passenger service to Hamilton, Waitomo Caves, National Park, Palmerston North, Paraparaumu and Wellington. On 21st December 2015, the Northern Explorer began operating from the new purpose built Auckland Strand Station located on Ngaoho Place on the eastern side of the CBD (Central Business District). Auckland Strand station is exclusively used by KiwiRail Scenic Journeys and has street-level access with a dedicated drop-off area. For those coming by car or taxi, Auckland Strand station is conveniently located just off SH16 (State Highway 16), making it very easy to reach.

Customers staying south of the city or looking to catch Auckland Transport Metro Train services to directly connect with the Northern Explorer, may prefer to use Auckland Papakura Station, which is also the most convenient station for those connecting directly with Auckland Airport.

Address: Auckland Strand Station, Ngaoho Place, Auckland 1010

Auckland Strand Station is the exclusive new home of the Northern Explorer; New Zealand's only long distance passenger train service from Auckland to Wellington. Located on the eastern edge Auckland's CBD, Auckland Strand Station has dedicated platform-side parking for easy drop-off and pick-up and the ticket office and check-in counter is located on the platform - making it very accommodating for those with heavy luggage and/or restricted mobility.

For those driving, the new Strand Station is easy to reach from State Highway 1 via the SH16 exit eastbound. Ngaoho Place (pronounced Nah-o-ho) is the second turning on the left after the second set of lights.

For those approaching from the CBD, Britomart Transport Centre or the ferry terminal, the Auckland Strand Station is a short taxi ride (1.5km). For those with time to spare, the walk along the harbour takes between 20-30 minutes (see our walking to Auckland Strand guide). Please note: there are no Metro Trains or Buses that connect with Auckland Strand Station and those requiring a public transport connection should consider using Auckland Papakura Station instead.

Our on-board staff can pre-book taxis for passengers arriving into Auckland Strand - just ask one of our on-board team during your journey.
