Walk Wellington
The compact capital is easy to get to know
One of the best ways to begin discovering Wellington’s many distractions is to simply walk around. With the hills on one side and the harbour on the other, everything’s relatively close.
Sights to look out for along the way include Parliament’s beehive, Lambton Quay, the heart of Wellington’s commercial and retail area, the famous Cable Car that climbs to Kelburn and the Botanic Gardens. Civic Square, Te Papa and its wonderful waterfront location, Bohemian Cuba Street, the many bars of Courtenay Place and the beaches of stylish Oriental Bay.
Get a bit more mobile and take to the hills for amazing views from Mount Victoria. Maybe head for the Miramar Weta cave to see some of the sheer genius that Wellington’s thriving feature film industry is capable of. Or visit Zealandia a unique eco-sanctuary for rare NZ wildlife, including the tuatara.
